PENTHALAB
PENT(H)ALAB centra su actividad en la generación de conocimiento aplicado en el ámbito de la arquitectura y el urbanismo, empleando un enfoque que incluye teoría, práctica y acción situada. Se investiga, desde lo proyectual, sobre procesos experimentales que generen nuevas formas de intervenir en el espacio construido y social.
Esta construcción de conocimiento se fundamenta en acciones de participación junto a comunidades locales, instituciones y profesionales. Se emplean así metodologías de cocreación, diseñadas específicamente para contextos urbanos, aprovechando las ventajas de la economía digital para la creación de redes colaborativas, la difusión abierta del conocimiento y la creación de plataformas participativas que permitan la apropiación del espacio y las dinámicas de placemaking. A estos procesos se incorporan herramientas de fabricación digital sostenible que permiten producir prototipos y facilitan la experimentación y validación en entornos reales.
Los resultados incluyen transformaciones tácticas, intervenciones efímeras del espacio público, integración de prototipos en eventos urbanos socioculturales, exposiciones y publicaciones académicas. PENT(H)ALAB emplea estos dispositivos de activación urbana para evaluar el impacto de las propuestas desde una visión integral. Se pretende así repensar los modos de habitar y transformar el territorio mediante una perspectiva inclusiva, sostenible y orientada a la acción.
PENT(H)ALAB focuses its activity on the generation of applied knowledge in the fields of architecture and urbanism, employing an approach that includes theory, practice, and situated action. The research is dedicated, from a project-based perspective, on experimental processes that generate new ways of intervening in the built and social space.
This knowledge construction is based on participatory actions directed to local communities, institutions, and professionals. Co-creation methodologies specifically designed for urban contexts are thus employed, taking advantage of the benefits of the digital economy to create collaborative networks, the open dissemination of knowledge, and the development of collaborative platforms that allow for the appropriation of space and the dynamics of placemaking. Sustainable digital fabrication tools incorporate into these processes, allowing the production of prototypes and facilitating experimentation and validation in real environments.
The results include tactical transformations, ephemeral interventions in public space, integration of prototypes in sociocultural urban events, exhibitions and academic publications. PENT(H)ALAB is based in these urban activation devices and uses them to evaluate the impact of its proposals from an integral vision. The aim is to rethink the ways of inhabiting and transforming the territory through an inclusive, sustainable, and action-oriented perspective.
COT(h)A
COT(H)A desarrolla su trabajo desde tres aproximaciones a la disciplina.
Desde la teoría arquitectónica, entendida como la base que sustenta el pensamiento crítico y la estructura subyacente en la disciplina, tenga esta un resultado físico o intelectual. Se estudia el objeto arquitectónico ampliado y las circunstancias socioeconómicos en las que se inserta, adentrándose en los ámbitos de la política, el género, la clase, la sociología y la economía.
Como segunda aproximación, se emplea como campo de trabajo la evolución histórica de la disciplina, incluyendo en la investigación los mecanismos de poder que condicionan la producción arquitectónica.
La tercera aproximación tiene que ver con el modo en el que se comunica la práctica y la narrativa profesional a la sociedad, tanto a un público especializado como a aquel ajeno a la disciplina y que es, a pesar de ello, el sujeto principal de nuestro trabajo. Esta narración integra las dos aproximaciones anteriores de estudio de la arquitectura.
Es a través de este proceso sintético como COT(HA) establece la transmisión de conocimiento y pensamiento para reconfigurar y actualizar el relato dominante de la arquitectura española y occidental y para contribuir a una necesaria actualización profesional y disciplinar.
COT(H)A line of research develops its work approaching the discipline in three different manners.
First, from architectural theory, considering it the basis that supports critical and analytical thinking and the inner structure within the discipline, whether its results are physical or intellectual. The main object of study is an amplified architectural item that includes the social and economic circumstances in which it is set, even entering the fields of politics, gender, social class, and economy.
The second approach employs the historical evolution of the discipline as a field of work; the research so includes the mechanics of power that influence architectural production.
The third line responds to the way in which architectural practice and professional narrative are transmitted to society, whether it is a specialized audience or a non-specialized one that is the main subject of our work. This narrative includes the other two approaches as an integrated way to research in architecture.
Through this synthetic process, COT(H)A establishes a way to transmit knowledge and thought and thus update and reconfigure the main narrative of Spanish and western architecture contributing to a necessary professional and disciplinary update.
MATRICES
La línea de investigación MATRICES se centra en el estudio y la visibilización de las arquitectas, las urbanistas y, de forma extensiva, las mujeres que, desde dentro o no de la profesión, han contribuido en el avance disciplinar y a quienes las prácticas tradicionales tienden a olvidar.
Desde este marco general se abordan varios aspectos cuyo objetivo es contribuir en la redefinición del ejercicio profesional para establecer una historiografía alternativa y feminista. Así, por un lado, desde un enfoque materialista, las investigaciones ponen en valor las tareas reproductivas y de cuidado, la cotidianeidad habitada. Por otro, no se olvidan los desafíos estructurales presentes en la sociedad: la revolución de género, la precariedad laboral, la digitalización social, etc. La intención es superar las categorías descriptivas disciplinares tradicionales que se han demostrado insuficientes para definir una cotidianeidad ampliada, inclusiva y feminista. MATRICES se aproxima a la investigación desde la teoría como forma de organizar el trabajo de campo y el desarrollo experimental directo. Lo hace además desde diferentes escalas que van de los objetos a los ámbitos domésticos, el entorno urbano y el territorio, con especial interés en los espacios intermedios que se producen entre ellas.
The MATRICES research line focuses on the study and acknowledgement of women architects, urban planners and, broadly, all women who, from within or outside the profession, have contributed to its disciplinary advancement, and whom traditional practices tend to forget.
Rooted in this general framework, the group addresses several aspects with the aim of contributing to the redefinition of professional practice by stablishing an alternative and feminist historiography. Thus, on the one hand, from a materialist approach, the research brings into focus the caregiving tasks and the inhabiting of daily life. On the other hand, the structural challenges present in society are always present: the gender revolution, precarious work, social digitalization, etc. The goal is to overcome the traditional disciplinary descriptive categories that have proven insufficient to define an expanded, inclusive and feminist daily life. MATRICES approaches research using theory as a way of organizing both the work field and immediate experimental development. It also does so from different scales ranging from objects to domestic spaces, the urban environment, and the territory, with a special interest in the intermediate spaces that appear between them.
HaVyC
La línea de investigación de HAVyC se centra en los estudios morfo-tipológicos de la vivienda y en los procesos sociales de producción del espacio urbano para desarrollar, a partir de estos principios, un entendimiento más amplio y transescalar de los modos de habitar, en los que se incorpore la vida cotidiana, el derecho a la ciudad y el acceso a la vivienda como posicionamiento crítico.
Para ello, el tema del espacio habitable se aborda desde múltiples vertientes (proyectuales, constructivas, urbanísticas y sociopolíticas) que en todo momento están vinculadas a las condiciones cambiantes del habitar, a las políticas urbanas y a sus múltiples escalas —de lo doméstico a lo infraestructural— y que incluyen prácticas de autoproducción y transformación del espacio.
HAVyC centra su trabajo de investigación en la producción de manuales, artículos y capítulos de libros, exposiciones y actividades junto a la ciudadanía, siempre de una forma abierta y adaptable. Es través de esta producción como se analiza la vivienda y el fenómeno urbano, tanto reciente como en perspectiva histórica, con vistas a proporcionar no sólo una lectura crítica de los modelos existentes sino también nuevos paradigmas contemporáneos.
HAVyC’s line of research focuses on morpho-typological studies about housing and the social processes connected to urban space production. Starting from these principles, the goal is to develop a broader and trans-scalar understanding of the ways of inhabiting, in which to incorporate daily life, the right to the city, and access to housing, all of them from a critical position.
To this end, the approach to habitable space includes multiple perspectives (architectural, constructive, urban planning, and sociopolitical) that are always linked to the changing conditions of inhabiting, urban policies and their multiple scales—from the domestic to the infrastructural—including practices of self-production and spatial transformation.
HAVyC focuses its research work on the production of manuals, articles and book chapters, exhibitions and community activities, always in an open and adaptable way. It is through this production that the group analyses housing and the urban phenomenon, both nowadays and from a historical perspective, bearing the objective to provide not only a critical review of existing models but also new contemporary paradigms.
PROPArQ
La línea de investigación de PROPArQ se basa en una concepción de la protección del patrimonio arquitectónico y cultural vertebrada en un abordaje multidimensional y multidisciplinar que permite la retroalimentación entre enfoques y metodologías complementarios para obtener resultados tanto teóricos como prácticos. Desde un marco amplio e integral, se da cabida a cuestiones normativas, proyectuales y constructivas.
El principal objetivo es una investigación transversal, integrada y colaborativa de la situación del patrimonio construido e inmaterial. La metodología, por tanto, es tan variable como el concepto de patrimonio: desde la normativa a la intervención en edificios y conjuntos históricos y su puesta en valor. Asimismo, se contempla la participación ciudadana en el reconocimiento del patrimonio urbano y arquitectónico.
La investigación profundiza en el patrimonio en los márgenes: las arquitecturas menores, encuentros entre el patrimonio material e inmaterial, que con frecuencia son producto de saberes artesanos y populares.
En conclusión, además de los hallazgos teóricos y prácticos, se promueve una conservación inclusiva, que reconoce tanto los elementos tangibles como intangibles. PROPArQ consolida una visión interdisciplinar y propositiva del patrimonio arquitectónico, orientada a su preservación activa y a su integración en los procesos contemporáneos de gestión.
PROPARQ research line it’s based in the concept of the architectural and cultural heritage protection, hinged, in a cohesive way, in a multilevel approach that allows for feedback between different approaches and complementary methodologies to produce both theoretical and practical results. From a broad and comprehensive framework, the research includes legal regulations, project related and building issues.
The main object is, thus, a cross section, cohesive and collaborative research about the situation of built and intangible heritage. Methodology, therefore, is as variable as the concept of heritage: from regulations to the intervention in historical buildings and urban spaces and its enhancement. Likewise, the citizen’s participation in the recognition of heritage is always taken into consideration.
The research deepens in the marginal heritage, minor architectures that represent the gathering of material and immaterial heritage and are usually a byproduct of popular and artisanal knowledge.
In conclusion, besides the theoretical and practical findings, the group promotes an inclusive protection that acknowledges the tangible and intangible elements of heritage. PROPARQ consolidates an interdisciplinary and purposeful vision of architectural heritage, always oriented to its active preservation and its integration in modern governing procedures.
